Hydrogen Ion Concentrion (pH)

8/16/2013

Hydrogen ion concentration (pH) refers to the acidity or alkalinity of water. The acidity or alkalinity of your water greatly effects any aquatic life if you have a pond or water feature with fish or plants. In addition, the water used near or on any soil effects what can be grown in that soil. Many pollutants can change the pH level and just a one point change on the scale represents a ten-fold increase or decrease.
Even the simplest changes in pH level can deter wild life and/or plant life. For example, if attempting to grow an orange tree it requires a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. This is in the slightly acidic to neutral range.

To create the right balance you need to know:

  • What you want to do with your yard
  • The correct hydrogen ion concentration required
  • Your current soil/water pH, and
  • How to get from the current pH to the required pH

Soil Technology can help determine the pH of your water and soil to help you find the right balance for your needs. For more information, contact Soil Technology in Fallbrook, CA for your pH, fertigation, and water management needs.
